At the Greater Essex County District School Board, we recognize that each student has unique interests, goals and strengths. We believe that every student should have the opportunity to be successful in school and graduate from high school. That is why the Greater Essex County District School Board is continuously working to enhance the learning experience for its students. The Student Success initiative focuses on supporting students from Grades 7 through 12, as they make the transition from elementary school to secondary school, navigate the many opportunities available to them in secondary school, and transition into their chosen pathway. Our goal is to help all students succeed and build promising futures for themselves.

A Message From Director Warren Kennedy

In just the past decade, we have experienced phenomenal growth in our capacity, as educators, to identify and meet the needs of all students. It has not been so much what we teach, as how we teach and how we measure achievement. We now acknowledge that there are a variety of pathways for students to follow and that their education should be designed to fit the direction that best suits their skills and aspirations. We also know that all students learn in different ways.

Because of this comprehensive approach, more students are completing high school and thus have a better chance for successful futures. Graduation rates in Ontario have been increasing over the past 5 years and the provincial Ministry of Education has set a goal of 85% by the end of the 2010-11 school year. In the Greater Essex County District School Board, we are striving to meet that target with programs such as Specialist High Skills Majors, Cooperative Education, e-learning and credit recovery. Our teachers demonstrate enthusiasm for continuing their own professional learning, and improving their practices so that their students will experience further success.

As long as we continue to create opportunities that allow all students to realize futures of their own design and desire, I believe we will all enjoy tremendous success.
