The Silver Birch Express Award™ is a reading initiative of the Ontario Library Association. Driven by the participation of the children, the program empowers young readers by having them read books of their own selection and vote for the winners. As a collaborative project with Mrs. Moore during library time Mrs. Hall's 5/6 class elected to use the Silver Birch Express selections as choices for literature circles. The students selected their top three books and then were divided into groups reflective of their choices. For several weeks the students read their books, reflected in their Book Buzz journals and entered into meaningful discussions regarding their selections. As each group completed their book selection they cooperatively created, wrote a script and recorded a "Book Talk" commercial using Audacity software in the computer lab.
