SUMMARY:
Gregor lives with his mother, grandmother, and two younger sisters in an apartment in New York City. His father, a high school science teacher, went missing two years earlier, and things have not been the same ever since.

One day during summer vacation, Gregor is home taking care of his two-year-old sister, Boots, and his senile grandmother. Boots goes missing in the laundry room, and when Gregor searches for her, he is just in time to see her disappear through a missing grate in the wall. Gregor goes tumbling into the depths after her, and the two of them end up in a mysterious, subterranean world where giant bugs, bats, and a whole other culture of humans has existed for centuries.

Boots is accepted as a princess by the bugs, who appreciate her malodorous two-year-old nature, and this results in them surviving long enough to be taken to the higher authorities. When he meets the humans in this world, it soon becomes apparent that Gregor is not the first person to arrive from the “Overland.” He is immediately caught up in an adventure where his success, and his very survival, will depend on his ability to adapt. This becomes even harder when he is recognized as a potential answer to a prophecy made years earlier by the founders of the civilization, and he has no choice but to follow along. He and Boots, as well as his new allies (some bats, some bugs, some very talented humans, and a large, battle scarred rat) set out on a quest to save the Underland…and in doing so, to rescue the man who just might be their missing father as well…

WHAT ELSE?
This is a great book, full of action, adventure, plot twists, and epic struggles between good and evil. It alternates between being a fantasy and being a science fiction, but is closest to fantasy. It won numerous awards and acclaim, and should be equally popular with girl and boy readers. There are two more books that make up the Underland Chronicles trilogy: The Prophecy of Bane and Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods.
