SUMMARY:
Margaret is the youngest and meanest of the nine Hubble children. She is so mean that one day her three older siblings leave Margaret in the woods to fend for herself. Margaret is taken in by a pair of unsuspecting newlywed woodchucks. Fred and Phoebe Woodchuck take a lot of pride in their home and they are soon overwhelmed by the human child, Margaret, who has an unusually large appetite and an unbecoming manner. Margaret literally eats Fred and Phoebe out of house and home, and they are forced to move in with an interesting menagerie of woodland animals who are more than willing to help out with the care and feeding of mean Margaret. Phoebe Woodchuck is broken-hearted when Margaret finally returns to the Hubble Family home. In the end Margaret learns a powerful lesson and Phoebe and Fred quickly fill the void of their former human child, Margaret.

WHO WOULD LOVE THIS BOOK? A kid who...
- likes to read about animals
- enjoys humour
- enjoys absurdity, like the writings of Roald Dahl
- appreciates charming stories like the works of E.B White
- enjoys stories where the characters learn a lesson

WHAT ELSE?
The book does a pretty good job of separating the really absurd (human Margaret living with woodchucks) from the more realistic (the daily life of the Hubble family).
