SUMMARY:
Jolly, named for the pirate flag the Jolly Roger, has grown up on a pirate ship as the adopted daughter of a notorious pirate. She is tough, bright, and ready for anything -- and she just happens to be a polliwog, one of the legendary children who can walk on water.

As the story begins, Jolly is demonstrating her hidden talents in a battle at sea, but things soon turn ugly. Her entire adopted pirate family is slaughtered by a mysterious plot, and Jolly herself barely escapes. She is rescued by a family of plantation owners on a nearby, almost deserted island, thanks to their young son, Munk, who finds Jolly washed up on shore.

Munk and Jolly are just happily getting acquainted when the enemy that has stalked Jolly's pirate family arrives on the island to finish the job. The two teens escape, thanks to some skills Munk hasn't revealed up until now -- including the fact that he, too, is a pollywog. Munk's parents aren't as lucky, however. Wracked by grief, Munk and Jolly vow revenge against the evil that has taken their loved ones. They are helped in their plans by the mysterious Ghost Trader and his legion of trained ghost slaves, as well as some new friends they meet along the way. Unfortunately, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that this is only the start of the slaughter. A force unlike anything ever seen before is coming to destroy life and the world as they know it...and only Jolly and Munk, the Wave-Walkers, are standing in its way...

WHAT ELSE?
Kai Meyer is a very popular writer in Germany, and this is one of the first of his books to be translated into English. The sequel, Pirate Emperor, is due May 2007 in English. It's a nice follow-up to Pirates of the Caribbean's Curse of the Black Pearl, with similar underwater creatures.
