SUMMARY:
Matt Freeman, age 14, maintains his innocence in the violence of a break-in. He is given a choice, however - go to youth jail or participate in a new government program, "Liberty and Education Achieved Through Fostering" (LEAF). He is sent to live with an old woman named Mrs. Deverill in the town Lesser Malling, Yorkshire.

While on the train, Matt falls asleep and through his dreams, we begin to realize that he is no ordinary child. He has precognitive abilities and can foresee the future. He also has a reoccurring dream in which he is "one of five who will save the world". He has no idea of his potential powers.

Matt quickly realizes that everything in Lower Malling is not as it appears. He investigates a mysterious light in the forest. It turns out the villagers are practicing witchcraft in an abandoned nuclear power station. A dying villager leaves a message/warning for Matt – “Raven's Gate.”

As he tries to discover what Raven's Gate is, he meets his future ally and saviour, Richard Cole, a newspaper reporter. His search also puts him in touch with a group called Nexus. These 8 men and 4 women are all aware of Matt, Raven's Gate and the “Old Ones.” Matt learns through them that the Old Ones only desire is to create pain and misery, and that they thrive on chaos. Years ago, four boys and one girl organized a resistance that expelled the Old Ones and sent them to another dimension. Nexus believe that Matt is one of five gatekeepers who have been chosen to save the world from this threat again.

The villagers of Lesser Malling intend to release the Old Ones with a witchcraft ritual, a fiery explosion from the nuclear reactor, and the spilling of Matt's blood. Can Matt develop his potential power in time to save the world from this ancient evil…and if he does, will he himself survive?
