SUMMARY:
Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, “Sal,” is travelling via car with her grandparents on a quest to find the truth about her mother's disappearance. She refuses to believe that her mom is dead, and feels great impatience to reach Idaho, the place where she last heard from her mother, so she can find her mom before her next birthday.

She has recently moved from the country to the city and has had to endure all the changes that this has brought to her life. She makes a new friend, Phoebe Winterbottom, who adds a little “fun” to Sal's existence. Phoebe has an interesting family, receives mysterious, anonymous messages on her front porch, has a very strange, and possibly scary, neighbour and a mother who has also disappeared.

Sal narrates the story of Phoebe to her grandparents as they travel from Ohio to Idaho having their own adventure. As she tells Phoebe's story, we learn a lot about Sal's story and the story of Sal’s missing mother as well.

WHO WOULD LOVE THIS BOOK? A kid who...

  • enjoys books about family drama
  • deals with grief and family issues – extended family, death of family members
  • enjoys first person narrative, dialogue-type books
  • is a girl
  • is feeling some teenage angst
  • has roots in the First Nations culture
  • has recently moved and or had upheaval in his or her life

WHAT ELSE?
This is a wonderful narrative tale about two girls in search for the mothers they've lost, and is a Newbery Medal winner. The main character has a partial First Nations bloodline, so there are a few Aboriginal inferences. Mom has indeed died in the book, so a child who has lost a family member may find this a little hard to read.
