Careful observation
is the first step in understanding a child’s behaviour. Observation is
watching children casually and formally over time, noting such things as:
- what they can or cannot
do
- how they relate to materials
and to other children
- which children they like
to play with
- which activities they
gravitate towards
- when they are busy and
when not
- how a child relates to
teachers
- which activities a child
seems to like best
- which activities a child
seems to avoid
- how involved a child is
with play
