Manipulative Stage
The child:

• experiments with brush and colours
• uses very little language
• works alone

• paints unrelated objects
• begins to make objects that are recognizable to the child
• begins to attach language to the symbols s/he makes

• plans and organizes compositions
• uses a variety of materials and pays attention to details
• uses appropriate vocabulary
• is able to work out problems independently

• introduce new materials to whole class: encourage students to discuss use of materials
• demonstrate various techniques/strategies during directed lessons: provide materials at centres so that students can rehearse, practice new strategies and refine skills
• provide spaces where each student will be able to display art

• encourage students to explain how they created/ completed their art
