Through observation and direct communication, assess whether the student:

  • chooses and uses materials appropriate to the task
  • perseveres with a task/activity
  • chooses to hear a story at the listening centre
  • participates in teacher read aloud/shared reading
  • handles books appropriately
  • uses effective language to express/describe
  • recognizes print in the environment
  • imitates reading/writing behaviour
  • experiments with sounds, words and patterns of language

Manipulative Stage
The child:

  • selects a favourite book

Symbolic Stage

  • reacts to humour

  • begins to associate the printed work with the spoken word
