Graphic Organizers The Ontario Curriculum lists 52 instances of the term "Graphic Organizer", 1 instance of "Visual Organizer", 14 references to "Venn Diagrams", and countless references to charts. Actually, "countless" isn't the greatest of terms since with the Ontario Curriculum Unit Planner, you can have the Planner give you the exact count. The bottom line is that there are many opportunities to draw charts, graphs, and other tools to help students document their plans, or to illustrate a particular problem. In fact, in the Ontario Curriculum Unit Planner, included are some blank Appleworks templates to assist the process. You'll find a template for Agree/Disagree Charts, Diagramming Charts, Fishbone Charts, Grid Charts, Ladder Charts, Mind Map Charts, Sequence Charts, Rank Ordering "Target" Chart, Venn Diagram Chart, and Visual Webbing Chart. These charts are intended to be manipulated with the Appleworks program and sent to a printer. If you're interested in doing more than turning the document to print material, how about our old friend Hyperstudio? The drawing and text tools give you the facility to at least create the same type of document possible with Appleworks. However, with Hyperstudio, you have the added ability to add multimedia components. Maybe you wish to include sounds, music, animation, etc. to further enhance the message that would normally be conveyed with a Graphic Organizer. With buttons and the inherent multimedia authoring abilities, the sky's the limit. You've even got the ability to add dimensionality to the process by linking to additional cards.
This simple little example shows how the draw tool combined with the text tool with colours and the circle drawing tool creates a simple Venn Diagram. For more ideas surrounding Venn Diagrams, consult your Ontario Curriculum. Venn Diagrams are such a powerful tool that they actually have their own website! And, one of the interesting pages lists the Top 10 reasons for using Venn Diagrams. For inspiration, it's well worth a visit: http://www.venndiagram.com/toptenvenn.html. Read on for other sources of information for Graphic Organizers.
