What's New at GECDSB?

Women in Technology

One of the disconcerting statistics about education is the drop off of interest of girls in computers, science, and technology as they finish elementary school and head to secondary school. On November 15, we tried to do something about it by partnering Belle River Public School, IBM Canada, and a wonderful group of volunteers to host a Women in Technology event at Belle River Public School.

Using their new wireless computer lab technology, the Grade 7 and 8 girls worked collaboratively with themselves and a volunteer to explore some of the opportunities that technology provides for them. Many thanks to Ms. Pohanka, Ms. Kunca, Ms. Winger, and IBM's Ms. Parkyn for coordinating the events of the day. By all reports, the day was a success. You can read all about it at our Women in Technology Website. http://www.gecdsb.on.ca/cait/winger/wit/.

The program can be replicated at other Greater Essex schools. If you're interested and want more details, drop me a line.

Technology Centres

Our Technology Centres at Essex District High School and W.F. Herman Secondary School now have a complete presence on the Internet.

The website describes in complete detail, along with pictures the story of the program that is offered at the centres for our students. If you've ever wondered just what goes on there, now you can visit albeit vicariously, through the Internet.

You can visit our Technology Centres, check out the curriculum and all of the cool activities that the students enjoy at: http://www.gecdsb.on.ca/sub/schools/elem/d2000/index.htm
