What's New at GECDSB?

Online Math

From Belle River District High School, mathematics and computer science teacher Larry Bekich has developed a resource to support Grade 9 Mathematics.

At the site, http://www.gecdsb.on.ca/sub/schools/second/brdhs/math/academic_index.html, you'll find a pretty comprehensive collection of resources to aid BRDHS and other Grade 9 students in their studies. In colourful, BRDHS school colours, you'll also find a complete collection of expectations for all of the courses in bulk, and organized by strand.

Filtering

Students and teachers are still challenged by the effects of the filter on Internet access. Designed to avoid wasting time on inappropriate sites, you'll periodically find that an internet site is not accessible from a school computer.

If the site really needs to be made available, there is a procedure in place to unfilter it. Load your First Class program and go to the Help section. There are two icons there that let you enter a suggestion to either block or unblock a particular internet site. Note that this feature is only available to teachers and only available on school computers.

Women in Technology

Our partnership with IBM Education and community mentors continues. So far this fall, Women in Technology sessions designed to encourage young ladies in Grades 7 and 8 to continue to do well in science and mathematics classes have been held. The first session at Prince Andrew Public School took place in October. The second session (with a large group of 77 young ladies) was held at Harrow Senior Public School. Look for details on the newly designed WIT website soon.
