Fireworks MX as an image editor?

You bet! Take a look at "The Bully" from the "No Bullying Proposal Webquest". On the top, you'll see the original and on the bottom the image after a bit of doctoring...

Notice that the image on the bottom has a 3-D effect and a title to it. Here's how Fireworks MX did it!

1. The original file was opened in Fireworks. Since it already had a transparent background, I didn't have to do anything to the image, but I could have selected the background with the magic wand and deleted it. (Remember this for future projects.)

2. From the Assets window, I chose the Styles tab and then played with the various styles trying to get the effect that I wanted. I ended up with Style 5 (the blue button in the top right corder of the Assets window.

3. Adding the text was easy. Just select the Text button , decide where on the image to place the text, adjust the text properties, and start typing.

4. Finally, you just can't resist playing with the text styles. Again, we return to the Assets window and chose the styles. Scrolling down, you'll see a whack of text styles. I tried them all and settled on style 24.

What a masterpiece! For saving the document, there's even an Export Wizard that steps you through the process to ensure that you get the perfect image.

Hyperstudio Festival

I'm pleased to announce that, due to the success of the Hyperstudio Festival that was held last year, a Hyperstudio Festival will once again be held to celebrate the efforts of our students' multimedia authoring.

When?
You can start as soon as it works into your schedule. I know that some schools make Hyperstudio a major part of big projects and are already working on their entries! The Festival will conclude in time to celebrate during Education Week 2003.

What?
The purpose is to celebrate how multimedia authoring fits into the curriculum. Any project with ties to the Ontario Curriculum is welcome. While Hyperstudio lends itself to Social Studies nicely, it can be used in all kinds of situations. Turn your students free to be creative.

How Many?
To keep it manageable, there are a limit of 6 entries per school.

Stack Size?
Entries must have no fewer than 5 cards per stack. In addition, a cover card will be made available to be placed as the first card in the stack to identify school, topic, etc.

Inspiration?
Just what can be done? Check with your school's CIESC and look for the CD-ROM that was created last year or the year before composed of all of the entries.

Good Luck! Those that participated last year really enjoyed the excitement that was generated as students worked towards a final product.
