Eqypt Through Time Webquest Greater Essex County Grade 5 students will first-hand get the opportunity to explore technology from Ancient Egypt using the technology in their modern classrooms! From March 19 to May 2, the Royal Ontario Museum’s “Egypt - Gift of the Nile” exhibit will be on display at the Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg, Ontario. Over 2000 Grade 5 students are booked to visit the display as part of their Social Studies Curriculum. However, this museum visit has a technological twist. An Internet Webquest “Egypt Through Time” allows Grade 5 classrooms to marry the technology in the classroom with the physical visit to the exhibit.
Students are divided into five groups, each inspecting one of the cultural aspects that form the basis for this exhibit.
These young explorers will first visit appropriate Internet websites before the visit to do some background research on their topic. Then, it's off to the exhibit to see the artifacts up close. Notes are taken, sketches are drawn, and observations made. Upon return to their classrooms, students will create a timeline where artifacts from the exhibits and results from Internet research are placed. This activity is rich in its coverage of expectations from the Grade 5 curriculum. 5z5 – demonstrate an
understanding of the basic features of early civilizations; The Egypt Through Time Webquest is available at http://www.gecdsb.on.ca/d&g/ict/ettw/.
