Welcome to the
Greater Essex County
District School Board's
Fighting Island Website
Fighting Island is a 6km² island located in the Detroit River just offshore from LaSalle Ontario. Owned by BASF Corporation, Fighting Island has been recognized by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity as a success story as the island is being revitalized to become a Wildlife Reserve in the midst of a heavy industrial geographic area. BASF Corporation has actively promoted this project since the mid-1970s.
Recently, students from the Greater Essex County District School Board have made Fighting Island a destination for field trips to observe and measure the environmental conditions on Fighting Island. As the result of specially designed lessons, students have the opportunity to study this project first hand. Using hand-held computer technology and probes, scientific measurements can be made with great precision. In addition, part of the field trip involves a visual inspection and observation of various areas of the island.
A Davis weather station is located at the school house area on Fighting Island. Current weather conditions can be observed as well as historical data. As this information accumulates, it will be made available for futher analysis of trends. Data has been recorded since April 2006.
