BANISH BORING ICONS FROM YOUR DESKTOP

You can use an existing graphic to replace an icon on your Desktop:

Open the Microsoft Paint program (Start, Programs, Accessories). Now choose Open to open any bitmap file (you'll know them by their ".bmp" extensions). To ensure your new icon doesn't lose its detail, select a small graphic.

Choose Save As and rename the file, making sure that you use ".ico" (without the quote marks) as the file's extension, as in "filename.ico." Save the file to a location on your hard drive where you can easily find it, maybe a special folder you've created for odd files such as these. Close Paint.

Right-click on whatever existing, boring icon on your Desktop you want to change. (Note: Some icons that are reserved for Windows features, such as My Computer, cannot be changed.)

From the drop-down menu, choose Properties, then the Shortcut tab. Now choose the Change Icon button, then Browse. Find your newly created icon, double-click on it, then choose OK in both windows. Your new icon should now appear on your Desktop, replacing the original.

FOR MAC...

If you hold down the Option key while clicking on the small triangles that appear next to folders in List view, not only will the triangle point down, revealing everything inside that folder, but all folders within that folder will open to reveal their contents.
