This month --- More on the Hyperstudio Festival

It's Questions and Answers Time about the Hyperstudio Festival

Why a Festival?
The goal is to showcase student efforts in the creation of Hyperstudio projects to support a particular area of the Ontario Curriculum.  We have a great deal of projects done all the time but they never get shared beyond the school.  The intention is to burn the winning projects on CD-ROM and share with all of our schools.  A release form will be signed by the parents of the winning projects.

What Topics Are Acceptable?
Any topic or theme that is prescribed by the Ontario Curriculum is fair game!   It is hoped that the Festival will generate some terrific resources in all subject areas.  Mathematics, Drama and Dance, Science and Technology, ...  The teacher submission form will specify what Curriculum Expectations are addressed in the project.

What Software Should We Use?
Obviously, Hyperstudio!  But, there are many other pieces of software that suit a particular purpose at your school.  All submissions must ultimately be a single Hyperstudio project.  Along the way, students may perform research on the Internet, use scanners or digital cameras, etc.

What Are The Dates?
Start now!  All submissions must be received before the March Break.  No projects will be accepted after that time.  Judging will occur during the month of April with the winners announced during Education Week.

How Many Projects Can I Submit?
From each elementary school, you may submit two projects from Grades 1-3, two projects from Grades 4-6, and two projects from Grades 7-8.  Each secondary school may submit six projects.  An in-school Festival and showcase to determine which projects to submit is strongly encouraged!

How Will The Projects Be Evaluated?
The overall goal of the project is to create learning resources to support the curriculum.  While graphics, images, and media can be an important part of delivering the content, it is not the only area.  This rubric will be used by the judges.   It is available as a Filemaker Pro file.  If you would like it in another format, please let me know.

Are There Limits to Project Size?
Yes.  To make this manageable, projects must include at least 10 cards but no more than 20 cards. The project must be self-contained.  Internet links to support a particular point are allowed.  The very first card in the stack MUST BE this one!

Is There a Standard for Quoting Sources?
Yes, and it is a requirement that any resource be properly quoted.  The Canadian Intellectual Property Office outlines issues surrounding copyright.  If a resource quoted belongs to someone else, it needs to be used and referenced properly.  Your Teacher-Librarian can point you to various styles and formats if necessary.

Good Luck!
