This Month ... Presentations ...

Hyperstudio is a program with many uses. Probably the most standard use, and the one that's used most often uses the program's ability to let the student "tell their story". Combining text, sound, and graphics make Hyperstudio the ideal program for this task.

But, what about more formal presentations? A number of people use programs such as WordPerfect Presentations or Microsoft Powerpoint. Certainly these programs are ideally suited for formal presentations. Have you considered Hyperstudio?

A couple of months back, we talked about the important of being experienced when using Hyperstudio. One of the features that becomes unlocked when you're experienced is the ability to display your cards on a full screen. Now, connect your computer to an Averkey or a data/video projector and you've got an ideal presentation ensemble.

There will be two connections to be made from your computer.

  1. You will want to connect the video out from the computer to your Averkey or projector. From a Windows computer, the 15 pin SVGA cable fits without further complication. On a Macintosh, depending on the model, you may need a special adapter. Run a cable from the video out of your computer to the Averkey or projector. Finally, loop back the cable from the Averkey or projector to your monitor. That will allow you to display your presentation simultaneously on your monitor and on your projection device. Make sure that you place your monitor directly between you and your audience so that you're not constantly looking away to see what is being displayed.
  2. Secondly, since you're using the power of Hyperstudio, you'll undoubtedly have sounds and perhaps MIDI played during your presentation. A computer and its small speakers don't do justice to sounds in anything but the smallest of rooms. But, there's no problem. Disconnect your speakers from your computer and run an audio cable directly to the sound input on your television set or on your video projector. Ensure that, if there are multiple inputs, that you have the audio and video on the same set of inputs and you're all set.
Do you need the latest and greatest program designed to do multimedia presentations? Absolutely not, if your computer is equipped with Hyperstudio. All of the colour, graphics, animations, and sounds are just a creative mouse click away.

From a student perspective, it gives students access to an entirely new set of tools and an application of this medium above and beyond one user, one computer, one stack of cards.
