It's Cold There Too! http://www.southpole.com

Science

With all the cold weather here in blustery Essex County, there has to be warm weather somewhere.  If it's cold in the north, does that mean that it's warmer in the south?

I decided to take a trek to the Southpole!  It turns out that's perhaps a little too far south (the thermometer at the site indicates that it's -29.4C), but http://www.southpole.com is an interesting place to visit, nonetheless.

In my search for online web cameras, the University of New South Wales in Australia's entry turns out to be very interesting.  Located at the South Pole, pictures are taken every 10 minutes and transported to a web server for the world to enjoy.

But, this web site is much more than just nice pictures from the South Pole. The page is host, certainly, to a variety of information about the South Pole and the Southern Hemisphere. Further, however, there is a selection of science activities designed to have students question some things that they may have accepted as fact. For example, just which direction does the earth turn? Is the boiling point of water the same everywhere?

If you enjoyed the visit to Russia last month, take a turn south and check out the South Pole this month!
