Students in Leamington Secondary’s Communications Technology Course to receive iBook laptop computers instead of textbooks this September.

Imagine that you are a secondary school student in the Greater Essex County District School Board and you arrive at school in September. You go to pick up your textbook for the Communications Technology course you are taking and instead of receiving a textbook, you receive a new iBook laptop computer.

This scenario is going to be a reality for students at Leamington Secondary School in September when they return from summer vacation.

The Greater Essex County District School Board, in partnership with the Apple Computer Company of Canada, is pleased to announce the "One to One Computer Initiative" which will be launched this fall at Leamington Secondary School. Students who are registered in the grade twelve Communications Technology program, will receive a new Apple laptop computer which they can then use in this course and to support their work in the rest of their studies. The Communications Technology program provides students with a 'high tech' experience in digital imaging and video production, making it a natural place to pilot the concept of 'one to one computer access' in a secondary school

This $75 000.00 investment in demonstrating the future of student learning in our secondary schools is a natural fit for Leamington Secondary School. In recent years this school has served as a pilot project for the Ministry of Education in providing expanded access to computer technology across the school curriculum. Mark Bates, Communications Technology teacher at Leamington Secondary School, has established an innovative and exciting program in this growing career pathway for students.

"The Greater Essex County District School Board has always taken great pride in being a leader in the provision of computer technology for our students,” states Mary Jean Gallagher, Director of Education. “This pilot project will permit us the opportunity to measure the impact that one to one computer access can have on achievement levels, and it further demonstrates the leadership of our teachers and administrators in providing the best possible learning opportunities for our students," adds Gallagher.
