| Putting project pages together can be a great deal
of fun. A project that your students may find themselves involved with
might be a travelogue or related project where their research takes them
to different world countries.
No project of this type would be complete without a representation of the flag of the countries involved. Sure, there are atlases and there are CDs full of clipart but they only give you a static representation of the national banner. How about a flag that's flowing proudly in the breeze? How would you do it? Animated GIFs of course. At this site, artist Riad Dagher has created the ultimate selection of world and provincial flags all using the techniques of animation through the GIF89 format to bring flags alive. The site offers the images free for use in non-commercial settings. So, if your page just begs for a waving flag for that finishing touch, give this web site a visit. In addition to flags, which are handily arranged alphabetically, the site also offers a good selection of other animated GIF files. ![]() Technical Note: How do you take a flag from a web page and store it on your hard drive. Quite easily, actually. For example, below is a waving Ontario flag. Move your mouse over top of the flag and press the right mouse button. Internet Explorer will give you the option to "Save Picture As" and Netscape Navigator lets you "Save Image As". Pick your desired drive, folder, and then give the file a suitable name and it's on your hard drive. Note that this technique will work for images that are copyright ok to save like Riad's flags as well as images that are not copyright ok to save. Always ensure that you have the right to save images in this manner. ![]() (dp) |
