Overall Expectations

By the end of Grade 7, students will:

  1. demonstrate a verbal and written understanding of and ability to apply accurate measurement strategies that relate to their environment;
  2. identify relationships between and among measurement concepts (linear, square, cubic, temporal, monetary);
  3. solve problems related to the calculation and comparison of the perimeter and the area of irregular two-dimensional shapes;
  4. apply volume formulas to problem-solving situations involving rectangular prisms.

AuntyMath

"Aunty Math" will present a new math challenge to the Internet audience via the DuPage Children's Museum site on the World Wide Web (www.dcmrats.org). Each challenge is presented in the form of a story taken from the life of Aunty Math.

Helping your Child Learn Math

This is an excellent site for parents, clarifying what it means to be a problem solver, to communicate mathematically and to demonstrate reasoning ability. It has 3 main sections: introduction (explains the basic principles underlying the current approach to Math); activities (using dice, coins, decks of cards) to do with children aged 5 through 13 arranged at increasingly harder levels of difficulty and lists of resources.

Math Lesson Plans

This is divided into three segments- K-5, 6-8, 9-12, and addresses all strands. Each lesson plan consists of grade level, strand, an overview, objectives, materials needed, procedures, and some encouraging students to talk and write about what they have learned.

Mathematics Clarifying the TEKS

This supports investigations and co-operative group work and is suitable for 1-8, including grades 9-10. Although it lacks an assessment rubric, it includes assessment tasks and extensions and consists of guiding and summary questions which could be used as sources for student communication but that are implicit rather than explicit in the directions.

4th and 5th Grade Student research Resources

a. Figure This: Math Challenges for Families - This is designed to provide an exciting and family-friendly way to become more involved in learning math. Each challenge, categorized by strand, features a description of the math involved, a note on where the math is used in the real world, a hint to get started, complete solutions, and additional related problems with answers. Family Corner has family support materials.

b. Problem Solving &endash; Searching for Solutions - This site supports the NCTM standards (hence, the Ontario Curriculum), and introduces students to 8 different problem solving strategies and real-life practice activities for applying problem-solving skills. A rubric is included as an assessment tool and is divided into 5 sections: correct answer, problem understanding, strategy, communication and reasonable result.

AAAMath

This interactive K-8 site addresses all strands and includes an explanation of the math topic and practice questions. A correct answer is given if an error is made.

AskERIC Math Lesson Plans: Mathematics

These are suitable for grades K-12 and are organized by subject and topic. They address many math strands and support co-operative learning and the use of manipulatives. Each lesson plan includes grade level, goals and objectives, materials needed, procedure, some include assessment and closure suggestions.

BBC Education-Maths File-Games Wheel

An interactive, fun site where each game/print-off explores areas of the U.K's National Curriculum. Strands are similar to Ontario's, but games are only available if you install the free, (takes 20 min.) Shockwave plug-in.The "Animal Weigh in" game may be confusing, (makes conversions between pounds and kilograms, kilograms and stone), and the money symbol is L (pound).

Brain Teasers

Each Wednesday, a new Brain Teaser for each grade range 3-4, 5-6, 7+ is posted and solutions are posted the following week. Helpful hints are suggested to solve these open-ended, non-routine problems. The 4-step procedure (Understand, Plan, Try It, Look Back) help pupils work out these archived brain teasers.

Harcourt Animated Math Glossary

This has a very complete glossary of math terms for each grade level, 1-8. In the primary grades, the term is accompanied by a visual and/or very brief definition, and in junior/intermediate grades, the term is accompanied by a description and examples.

Harcourt Math Advantage

This site requires the "shock wave" plug-in, and is suitable for grades 1-8. Most strands are represented except Data Management and Probability. It includes an Animated Math Glossary appropriate for each grade level.

Magical Metric Madness: Learn the Metric System on Line with Mr. Light Bulb

This junior, intermediate site addresses metric prefixes, metric length, metric volume and metric mass. Each topic consists of a self-instructional package, beginning with a pre-test, including objectives. Topic related information is introduced and opportunities are provided for students to practice what they have learned and a post-test concludes each topic.

The Math Forum

This site contains resources for all strands and grade levels including discussion groups, problems of the week, units and lessons. This is a question and answer service for math students and their teacher with a searchable archive available organized by level and topic. Math Goodies: Free Interactive Math Lessons

These 54 interactive math lessons grouped in 8 modules actively engage students in the learning process and provide them with immediate feedback. Each lesson provides examples with solution, definitions and explanation and at the end of each module challenge exercises are included and could be used to assess understanding of module concepts. It addresses all strands except geometry.

The Math League

The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. The Math League specializes in math contests, books, and computer software designed to stimulate interest and confidence in mathematics for students from the 4th grade through high school. Over 1 million students participate in Math League contests each year. Contest problems are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. a. Cyber Challenge - An interactive site where students have a 60 second time limit to complete 15 addition, subtraction, multiplication or division questions. It gives the correct answers and score at the end of the time limit.

b. My Math Class - This needs Macromedia Flash 4 player to play and is suitable for grades 3-8. It introduces 2 topics: Fractions (15 lessons) and Decimals and Percents (10 lessons). Each lesson includes examples, practice problems and review problems and a final test is included at the end of the unit.

c. Family Fun - This site provides Rich Tips for creating a home environment which fosters learning. A different home activity to do at home is presented each week for Grades 3-5 or 6-8; and encourages "thinking out loud" while doing the activity.

d. Daily Brains - Here, a daily problem is posted along with a suggested problem solving strategy. The answer and a detailed explanation of the problem-solving process is included. The problems are archived for future use, and connect to other curriculum areas in Science, History, Geography, and Health.
