Summer Computer Institutes

Sometimes, it's easier to develop new computer skills without marking and lesson preparation for tomorrow in the back of your mind. I am pleased to announce that, once again, a selection of computer summer institutes will be made available to Greater Essex County teachers. There's a wide variety of offerings as described below - a little something for everyone interested.

Computer Wise
July 25
You will learn how to facilitate the use of technology in the lab as well as in the classroom. You will also learn how to integrate computers with curriculum expectations and approach various projects. You will be designing and creating both software and Internet supported activities that are both focused and relevant. Novice and knowledgeable computer users are welcome.

July 31, August 1, August 2
Must attend all sessions July 31, August 1, August 2 This Institute will provide an introduction to the Internet using Netscape and Internet Explorer, as well as Web Page Design using Claris Home Page. We begin with a cursory overview of First Class Tips, followed by an introduction to search engines, identification of copyright free graphic images and sound files, use of digital equipment, graphic manipulation, and the construction of web pages with school applications such as school web sites, WebQuests, and school intranets. All participants will create and post their own web site.

Historically Speaking
August 7
A workshop to introduce teachers to using Ministry licenced software in the History classroom. The sessions will give the teachers exposure to the software content and practical methods of integrating the software into the curriculum topics in order to enhance their program. Also, the use of webquests pertaining to the History curriculum will be investigated.

I've Turned On the Computer - Now What?
August 8, August 9
Must attend both sessions August 8, August 9
Making effective use of the classroom computer. Practical tips to assist teachers in using one or more computers effectively in the classroom. Participants will develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will help them create an integrated, supportive technological environment for the classroom.

Making Movies
August 8
With Digital Cameras, iMovie, and a little inspiration, you and your students can become movie makers! In this workshop, you'll learn how to integrate digital video, sounds, animations, stills, etc. to produce your own movies and Quicktime productions.

Clay Animation
August 21
Clay animation as seen in the hit movie Chicken Run can be a very exciting hands-on classroom activity. Teachers will work in a hands-on environment to produce clay figures, do the animations and use them in presentation software. Linking the Curriculum to Computer Applications. Language Arts (writing skills) and the Arts (3D) produce two and three dimensional works of art that communicate ideas (thoughts, feelings, experiences) for specific purposes and to specific audiences.

Beyond the Basics: Planning Assessing and Evaluation with eTeacher

Topics to be covered: Creating Units and Subtasks, Rubrics, Long Range Plans, Importing and Exporting Units, Assigning and assessing subtasks, synchronizing to Palm Pilot, Accessing data in Report Card Data.
