What's New at GECDSB?

You'll recall that, in the March edition, we focused on the Library initiative that's going to put a million dollars worth of new books into Resource Centres.

In fact, the initiative has its own website.

Teacher Librarians all over the district are celebrating this influx of new materials. Some are even celebrating with digital camera and web page authoring tools.

For example, check out the Southwood site.

And, over at Davis, we have this entry.

And, from McWilliam, we have these pictures. The comment was that there were so many books, they were just "everywhere"!

However, our teacher librarians will have them into circulation as quickly as they can. It's exciting times in the resources centres and it's nice to see technology used to capture the events.

Another initiative got off to a great start in May.

It was the official kickoff to the OKNL ICT Initiative in three of our Leamington area schools.

On May 7, Leamington District Secondary School welcomed all of the Leamington area schools to a Music Concert and part of the displays that were in the main foyer was devoted to showing all that's available to students at LDSS in their English and Mathematics classrooms.

On May 13, parents at Mill Street Public School were treated to a formal assembly and an opportunity to visit classrooms and see the software in action. For me, however, the highlight of the night was the musical routine put on by Mrs. Johnston's Grade 2 class. The students were wildly enthusiastic about their performance and conveyed the excitement that's happening in all classrooms involved in this project.

Finally, a couple of new Webquests have been added to the GECDSB webquest collection.

Jack Wants to Plant Another Garden - This Grade 3 Webquest was constructed with the Grade 3 science curriculum in mind. If you're investigating the growth of plants with your students, check this one out.

Positively Poetry - This webquest was designed for students in Grade 4 specifically to deal with age appropriate poetry. Students will be given the opportunity to explore others poetry with a view towards understanding the different styles of poetry that are available.
