You may have noticed the television advertisement for this particular event on CBC. The CBC is planning a series of television shows for this fall based upon the feedback from this survey. Essentially what happens is that Canadians are asked to select the one Canadian figure from history that they would classify as the "greatest" Canadian of all time. The results will be tallied and used as the basis for the series. Out of curiosity, I wandered over to the website. I enjoyed the television commercials where Shania Twain was debated in the same context as Lester Pearson or Wayne Gretzky. The presentation, once you get there, is inspiring. The list of Canadians is presented alphabetically with copyrighted images where appropriate. In addition to the image, a short biography of each Canadian is presented. That's the easy part. The difficult part is working through the list alphabetically. "Never heard of him". "Oh, she would be an awesome choice". By the time the "C's" were done, I realized that I'd need to keep track of these wonderful choices. It got a little easier when there were no "Q's" or "X's". However, the task is daunting. There were so many choices. In addition to the online survey, for educators, there are a number of downloadable worksheets for ideas about how to incorporate the concepts from the website into Social Studies classrooms. This site is a winner. If you're going to vote, you need to do so by mid-May.
