In an attempt to ensure that only quality and curriculum-related websites are available from District computers, internet filtering has been enabled on our networks.

Requests for Internet webpages, must pass through the filter. If the website requested is on "the list", then a message indicating that it is blocked will appear on your screen. Does this mean that this is someone who sits at a computer all day long looking for these sites? Of course not.

The blocking is purchased as a service and the sites that are blocked are that way because they are deemed to have fallen into a certain category. For example, instant messaging which allows for point to point chatting is not available for student use.

Whenever you categorize things, there's always the possibilities for casualties. As an example, there were some links on the Student Reference Portal that the service we purchase had blocked. GASP! I put a lot of time and effort in determining that those sites provided curriculum relevance.

Fortunately, as with most filters, you can poke a hole in the filter and allow exceptions. While a whole category may be filtered, it is still desirable at times to allow these exceptions through.

To facilitate the process, teachers only have access to a link to request that a site be unblocked. You can access this link in the "Help" conference on First Class.

Double click on the "URL unblock request" and your computer will be directed to a form on a webpage that is easily completed. Upon submission, the site is reviewed and unblocked.

Similarly, there may be sites that are not currently blocked that should be. Clicking on "URL Block request" will let you request that an additional site be blocked.

Turnaround time for the unblocking is promised to be quick, so send in your request with a couple of days advance notice so that it's ready when you need it.

Not getting the cute little red and green icons in your Help Conference? Recently, the First Class administrator posted an updated set of icons in the "All Staff" conferences. Follow his instructions and install the newest set into your First Class client.
