First Class Email Tips and Tricks

Quickly Handling Attachments:
Attachments come in all shapes and forms. We all know the procedure for handling them.

  1. Open the email message
  2. Double click on the name of the attachment
  3. Select a place to store the attachment
  4. Click on SAVE in the resulting dialogue to save the attachment to your hard drive
  5. Exit First Class
  6. Open the second application that will process the attachment
  7. Locate the attachment on your computer
  8. Open the attachment and do what you will with it

But there's a quicker way.

If your computer has the second application installed properly then your computer knows what documents that application is capable of opening. For example, WordPerfect documents, properly saved, should end with the extension .WPD.

Next time you get an attachment, hold down the CTRL key as you double click on the name of the attachment. Instead of simply saving the attachment to your hard drive, your computer will open the appropriate application and automatically load the document for you. What a terrific timesaver.

Check out the picture below. Angela has emailed me the December 1998 calendar for Colchester North Public School. I CTRL/Double Clicked on it and WordPerfect has automatically opened on top of my First Class program. I can now edit the calendar directly without jumping through all the hurdles outlined above.

It may take a little practice to change the way you view attachments but the time that you save in the long run definitely makes learning the procedure worthwhile.
