PD BookIT FAQs

Here are some commonly asked questions dealing with the BookIT system.

What is BookIT?
BookIT is a piece of software that the GECDSB purchased from Core Solutions in London, Ontario. It is a series of Filemaker Pro databases that uses Lasso to connect to webpages on the Internet at http://bookit.gecdsb.on.ca/gecdsb/default.htm. It runs 24 hours a day on its own server.

What's My Login and Password?
Logins are created for Greater Essex County employees. The login is created using the same login that you have for your First Class email account. There is a default password that you should change on your first visit to BookIT.

How Do I Change My Password?
Visit the BookIT site on the Internet. On the opening page, there's a link entitled "Update your Current Information". Clicking on that link will take you to a screen where you'll be able to make the change.

Confirmations are Good. How Do I Get a Confirmation?
At any time, you can log into BookIT and see your institute portfolio. In addition, when you register for an institute, de-register, or after you complete an evaluation, an appropriate message is sent to your First Class mailbox.

Why Can't I Register for the Institute at Dowswell tomorrow?
Out of courtesy to Institute leaders, there is a "closing date", typically one or two weeks in advance of the institute date, at which registration closes. You cannot register or de-register online using BookIT after that time. This deadline lets facilitators know how many people are registered for session in order to determine the number of handouts, etc. that will be needed.

After I Attend an Institute, How Do I Get a Certificate of Participation?
Certificates are generated automatically by the BookIT program. They are in Adobe Acrobat format and are emailed to you as a message attachment. The email address that they are sent to are controlled by your user profile and must be your GECDSB email address. Two things have to happen to trigger the certificate though. The facilitator must mark you in attendance and you must complete an evaluation of the institute.

Does BookIT Send Information to the Ontario College of Teachers?
No. All that BookIT does is keep track of registrations and evaluations on a single server located at the Board Office.

Why Don't Institutes That I've Taken Go Away?
By choice, we've elected to keep all of the institutes on file. That way, you can always go back and check to see what institutes you've previous taken, what your evaluation was, and if necessary an additional Certificate of Participation can be generated by BookIT.

What's Better? 1 or 4?
The rubrics for evaluating an institute correspond to many of the rubrics that we're all so familiar with in the new Ontario Curriculum. A 4 is the highest value that can be assigned.

Why Do I Have to Comment If I Give a 1 or 2?
Part of the process of evaluation is to provide good feedback to the presenters. If you are unsatisfied with an institute, BookIT requires that you explain why.

Why Anecdotal Feedback?
While a rating of 1 to 4 provides a quantitative level of feedback, you can't beat a few sentences to explain exactly how you felt about an institute. All participants are encouraged to give constructive feedback. If something can be presented better, the presenter generally would like to know. As well, positive feedback is also appreciated!

Who Do I Contact for Help with BookIT?
Both Carol Edmondson and Doug Peterson deal with BookIT on a daily basis. If you are having difficulties with anything, Carol and Doug would be happy to assist.
