Mill Street Public School, Pelee Island Public School and Leamington District Secondary School are part of a pilot project that focuses on integrating ICT into the classroom. In March of 2003, Mill Street and Pelee Island Public Schools received six computers in each classroom. Leamington District Secondary School's math and English classrooms also received six computers. Each school in the project was also provided with printers, scanners, and data projectors. A cache server has been set up in each school as well to ensure safe, reliable Internet content. Specialty software, designed to assist students who learn differently, has been utilized by many teachers in their classrooms since the project began. The goal of the project is to increase student achievement and to improve teaching and learning through the use of ICT. As part of the project, resources will be developed by teams of writers and eventually shared throughout the province. Units will focus on using computers in the classroom to assist in the development of literacy and numeracy. 'Blended Solutions' is a blend of new and re-conditioned computers placed in classrooms with the intent of matching the technology requirements to student activities and needs. By providing a blend of technology, accessibility is significantly increased. Teaching is being supported through on-site professional development. A four page newsletter highlighting successes of the project is available in pdf format. To find out more about the project and ideas on classroom management in an ICT environment, technology integration activities or technology related bulletin boards, please visit our ICT Website. This pilot project that was made possible through a partnership between the Greater Essex County District School Board, the Ontario Knowledge Network for Learning (OKNL), Computers for Schools Ontario, and private sector businesses.
