Looking for an interesting projects for students that combines Internet access, electronic mail, and hands-on Science? The CIESE (Centre for Improved Engineering and Science Education) looks for classes through the world to participate in a water quality and assessment project.
From their website, participating classes submit their observations and results. Once entered, they become part of a huge database that is available for downloading in a variety of formats. From our perspective, they are available in Microsoft Works and Clarisworks spreadsheet format.
In addition to the collection and dissemination of raw data, there is an area for discussion of the results. From a teacher's perspective, there is a whole page including lists of materials, a teacher's guide, and links to curriculum standards.
A small list of what goes into the Water Sampling Tests appears below...
Some of the tests for this project are required. It is important that all participants supply data for the required tests so that there is enough information for students to analyze. Other tests are optional.
