As computers and software are used in the classroom, a really good question is "What should we be doing with them?

It's not a bad question.

While those of us who have been using computers for longer than we care to admit have a good idea of what is possible, it is of considerable concern to those who want to make it a part of the regular classroom regime but would like to have some guidelines for assistance.

Last year, a group of Greater Essex County educators developed a document to help the cause.

Starting with documents originally created by the former Essex County and Windsor Boards, ideas from ISTE and the Ontario Curriculum documents, a home grown package has been produced and will be piloted this year in our schools.

The document's format identifies 5 strands for use in our elementary schools.

  • Computer Operation
  • Curriculum Support
  • Multimedia
  • Research/Information Literacy
  • Writing/Publishing

My thanks to those who worked on the document.

The document outlines specific expectations for computer use in each of the three divisions. We took it just a little further though. Each group was asked to be a "fly on the wall" and describe some scenarios that one would expect to see in a well integrated computer classroom.

The results should prove handy as we look towards the introduction of the document within the district. Look to your CAIT with a copy in their next visit to your school.
