Goal setting is incorporated at the beginning of each semester. Students are assisted in setting goals and are encouraged to further reflect on the contents of their portfolio.

Looking back on the process, the portfolio has served not only as a record of how well students progressed and of areas for improvement, but as a memory book of the year in passing.

I begin the year by introducing students to the concept of portfolios. We discuss the purpose of the portfolio and the reflection process. Students design a cover and create a slogan for their portfolios. Some slogans have included: On the Right Track and Climbin' to Success.

Next, students bring in two pieces of bristol board that are cut into fours, turned into large pocket style portfolios and spiral bound. Their laminated cover designs are attached and each pocket is labeled with an appropriate title. I choose to have the students use each pocket for a different subject and the last pocket for 'Teacher's Choice'.

Time is set aside throughout the week for students to select items for their portfolio and write reflections. As the year progresses, students begin to include selections as part of their regular routine.
