Sand Table Centre
Expectations Assessment

The students will:

  • use scientific terminology
  • develop classification skills
  • explore the properties of sand and water
  • develop problem solving skills
  • play co-operatively
  • manipulate tools and material
  • explore the concepts of matter

Through observation and direct communication, assess whether the student:

  • makes comparisons using appropriate language
  • estimates capacity of two containers
  • estimates and compares mass
  • records data in appropriate ways
  • creates,extends/describes patterns using sand molds
  • uses appropriate tools in wet/dry sand
  • uses appropriate language to describe the concepts/activity
  • plans work with others
Stages Of Development

Manipulative Stage
The child:

  • creates tactile experiences with wet and dry
  • does unstructured pouring, sifting, mounding, digging
  • engages in repetitive play

Symbolic Stage
The child:

  • experiments with materials
  • begins to predict, label, compare, measure
    shares, discusses and observes

Organizational Stage
The child:

  • plans and organizes creations/constructions
  • modifies the activity as the play develops
  • begins to work more to scale
