Expectations Assessment

The students will:

  • record spoken language
  • write from left to right and top to bottom
  • connect words with meaning
  • sequence events
  • write a variety of forms
  • utilize emergent reading and writing skills to make signs and record structures
  • create their own bookshelves-develop fine motor skills
  • write for a variety of purposes

Through observation and direct communication, assess whether the student:

  • chooses and uses materials appropriate to the task
  • perseveres with the task/activity
  • chooses to hear a story at the listening centre
  • participates in teacher read aloud/shared reading
  • handles books appropriately
  • uses effective language to express/describe
  • recognizes print in the environment
  • imitates reading/writing behaviour
  • experiments with sounds, words and patterns of language
Stages Of Development

Manipulative Stage
The child:

  • write scribbled symbols that have meaning to the child
  • begins to write random letters
  • experiments with letters and prints

Symbolic Stage
The child:

  • connects words with meaning
  • begins to put words together for formal meaningful sentences

Organizational Stage
The child:

  • identifies a sequence of events
  • begins to use descriptive language effectively
  • is aware of syntax
  • develops the ability to write for a variety of purposes
