Student-centered investigations, referred to as rich investigations or rich tasks, are learning contexts which require students to explore through inquiry, discovery, and research.

Investigations come from a variety of sources and contexts and are mainly used to generate alternatives and solve problems. They require varying amounts of time to complete. During these investigations, the teacher acts as a facilitator, supporter and resource person, while the student is highly involved in observing, investigating, inferring information from data and forming hypotheses.

Before using any inquiry based activity, the teacher should check that it

  • provides students with opportunities to use their knowledge and skills in authentic ways
  • is set in a context that is meaningful to students' lives
  • incorporates a variety of relevant assessment strategies and tools
