Welcome back... The summer saw a great deal of activity on the professional development front for Greater Essex County teachers. The summer institutes were packed with interested educators honing their skills. On the computer front, it was no different. Packed houses were the order of the day as institutes were offered for: Drafting A special tip of the hat to those who participated in the institutes and a special thank-you for the teachers who prepared and delivered the courses. In elementary schools, the Computer Skills document which was piloted last year will find its way into all classrooms. The Greater Essex County District School Board has licensed eTeacher2 which should fundamentally change the way that classroom management is handled. Curious? Talk to your CAIT or plan to attend a workshop session. The school year 2000 watches the new secondary school curriculum roll its way into Grade 10. From a computer perspective, we watch as the new TIK and TEE courses unfold. Computer Science teachers will be working on new courses of study to deliver this exciting content devoted to Computer Programming and Computer Engineering. As new resources are created and located, look to the Computer Science web page as a resource http://www.gecdsb.on.ca/d&g/cscience.htm Two other computer initiatives at the secondary school level involve computer software as well. The use of The Geometer's Sketchpad in mathematics classes and MFTeach and ArcView in Geography classes should provide some exciting computer opportunities for students. Professional development opportunities for The Geometer's Sketchpad are planned and the Ministry licensing of the GIS software packages come with self-paced professional development packages. There are exciting things on the horizon. Best wishes for a successful school year. |
