As we do every year, the CAITs sit down and develop a list of priorities that we will try to develop throughout the school year in all our schools. This is not to say that we will not pursue other areas, just that we feel that these are the areas of greatest need. This year, these are our target areas: eTeacher As always, this is an area of great concern for all teachers, but hopefully, we are getting more comfortable with the program. Many teachers are now starting to branch out into the other parts of eTeacher, such as Planning and Assessment. This year, eTeacher 3 will be available to all staff. It is not a mandatory upgrade. We will continue to support eTeacher 2, and for those who still wish to use it, Homerep.
Primary Math This fall, we will be introducing three newly licensed primary math programs, Jungleway, Kidway and Speedway. They are suitable for use in JK-2, and like all programs, can be useful in other grades with the right students.
HyperStudio HyperStudio continues to be a dynamic and educational multimedia presentation tool for use in junior and intermediate classes. If you haven't used this program, take a look at it. There are evening institutes offered on the program, or your CAIT would be delighted to help you with setting up a class project. Again this year, we are hoping to have a HyperStudio Festival, open to all students.
StudeNTVista All the PC schools are now running StudeNTVista. This desktop system allows the teacher the ability to customize classes and the programs available to those classes; set up on-line homework assignments, and submission; use a bulletin board to keep apprised of upcoming events, and provides increased security.
CD's Your CIESC will be providing every teacher with two CD's in the near future. The first is a Math CD, based on the successful releases on Science and Technology, and then the Social Studies CD. The Math CD is an index of hundreds of sites, both on the CD itself and as active links on the Internet. If you need any help with the CD, the CAITs will be very happy to demonstrate it. The second CD is entitled Essentials, and is a compilation of many of the most used programs and documents that every teacher will need at some point in time. It has First Class, forms for a multitude of requests, and far too many things to mention here. This is a CD that should be invaluable to you.

Another Tip for iMovie (MAC) This tip comes from Macword's Editor-in-Chief, Andy Gore. Did you know that you can add sound effects to Apple's iMovie by dragging AIFF files to the Sound Effects folder found within iMovie's Resources folder? Once you drag those files to this folder and launch iMovie, the sounds you dragged appear in iMovie's Sounds pop-up menu.
Today's Tip: More Shelf Space in iMovie (MAC) If you run Apple's iMovie on a monitor set to a resolution of 1024-by-768 rather than 800-by-600, you'll gain three shelf spaces for storing clips. This higher resolution provides you with 12 shelf spaces versus the nine spaces you get with 800-by-600.
Share your Favourites (PC) If you have a large list of favourite sites in Internet Explorer, and wish to share them with someone, move them to another machine, or just want a back-up, it's easy to do. Open the C:\Windows\Favourites folder from within Explorer, select all the folders and icons, and drag them onto a floppy disk. Repeat the process to drag and drop them to the Favourites folder of another PC.
Virus Protection (PC) There is no better tip for the safety of your computer than to have an up-to-date virus protection program installed and running. Although Mac's are susceptible to viruses too, the vast majority of viruses and worms are designed to infect PC's. There are many effective programs available, at very reasonable cost. There is even a free version available on First Class. It is well worth the investment in time and money to protect your computer and data. Just think. How much is your time worth if you have to spend 20 hours re-writing your report cards after they are wiped out when your son or daughter downloads an infected e-mail, or shares an infected floppy with a friend. |

Windows
Pop-Up Killer Pop-up advertising windows can be inconvenient to downright annoying, so eliminate them with PopUp Killer. This program loads to your system tray, watching your Web browsing and automatically wiping out pop-up windows. It can work in either automatic or manual mode, and even sports sound effects with each "kill."
MAC - Sherlock Ad Remover Mac OS 8.5 introduced the enhanced find program "Sherlock" for Internet searches, and this free utility can remove banner ads from these searches. Download these and past picks at: http://www.komando.com/other/downloads/picks Find a
Festival Anywhere http://www.festivalfinder.com Summer's coming, and that means it's time for festivals. From bluegrass to reggae and heritage to alternative, you're sure to find something for you and your family to do this summer. Search by festival type, location or date, and don't miss out on the best in public activities! |
