A
new school; a new website

September
5 sees the opening of Talbot Trail Public School. Located in South
Windsor on Ducharme Street, this state of the art school features many
innovations. We're fortunate that staff worked over the summer to get
their web presence up and running for the first of school. Check them
out on the web.

Internet
math walk

In
June, I participated in a Math Trail that took us through downtown
Windsor looking for real life mathematics. It's amazing how much is
out there in patterns, numbers, shapes, transformations, etc.
Mathematics
is everywhere and Math Trails celebrate all that is good and observable
in mathematics in your surrounding. In fact, the Canadian
Math Trail encourages schools all across the country to
develop and submit mathematics based upon your location. Interesting
things to discover about the country.
Do
all math trails involve physically walking about your community? The
internet is full of examples of mathematics in action. Inspired by
Lisa and Brent, I created the Internet
Math Walk. It's not as exciting perhaps as physically doing the
walk but you won't get wet!

Keeping
an eye on the weather

With
all of the science that happens on Fighting Island, it's a natural that
the place would be perfect for a weather station. Last spring, one
was installed on the classroom on the island and it constantly provides
information about the weather to the internet.
A
link to the weather station website is available from the Student
Reference Portal.

Online Learning

In some cases, taking a secondary school credit online is an option
for students. The Greater Essex County District School Board is part
of the Ontario Virtual Academy for e-Learning. A number of courses are
offered online for qualified students. The process is described at the
Online Learning
website.
