School opens this fall with all kinds
of challenges for everyone.
New curriculum has been received by the truckload for the
elementary panel and this will occupy most of the
attention of these teachers.
At the secondary level, curriculum is expected to be
released within the year. Course thumbnails will
appear first with the curriculum to follow. From a
computer perspective, it's always a challenge when
classroom computers are turned on again after a summer
hiatus. It never fails to amaze me how a perfectly
functional machine in June becomes a lump of silicon in
September. But it does, and a little expert work by the
Computer Service department breathes life into the
machines so that they can again be used for the good
things that they were originally purchased before.
In
city schools, this will be the first year in many that a
phone call to, or an email to, Harry Groves will not
result in his usual cheerful answers. Officially, he has
retired and is now enjoying the good life. I wish him
every bit of success and enjoyment.
While
he's gone, he promises not to be forgotten. Already,
Harry has made plans to continue with some of his pet
projects like Challenge Cup, and running the computer at
various track and field events. We'll all look forward to
his continued involvement with GECDSB.
For
years now, Harry has been the editor of "Grover's
Travels" which amalgamated with my CIESC Contact! to
form a web based monthly newsletter "Doug and
Grover's Online Newsletter". As we move into a new
phase with "GEC Computers in the Classroom",
Harry has promised me that he'll drop off articles and
pertinent web sites from time to time. His experience
will be gratefully appreciated.
Finally,
my best wishes to everyone for a successful year
integrating computers into the classroom.
