History: Grade 8 - Canada: A Changing Society

In studying Canada as a changing society, students focus on why and how changes occur in society. They examine social and economic factors, as well as individuals and groups, promoting change in Canada up to 1918. Canada's involvement in World War I is studied, with emphasis on the impact of the war on both Canadians and the world community.

2. analyse and describe the conflicts and changes involving Canadians from Confederation to 1918;

Canadian Women in History		1,2	Biographies of Canadian women in history plus quotes from famous women around the world. Also topics such as women’s right to vote.
Wilno Heritage Society		2	Wilno is the oldest Polish settlement in Canada. The area was initially settled in 1859 by Polish immigrants arriving from the Kaszubian region of Poland. Over a century and a half, the descendants of these strong-willed people have laboured and thrived in this still distinctly Kaszubian region of Canada.
The Canadian Great War Homepage		3	This site provides the visitor with an overview of Canada’s role in this terrible conflict. There are links to the army, navy, air force, Victoria Cross winners etc., as well as a research library and links to other Internet resources.
Canadian History		1,2,3	This site is made up of short articles for students to read followed by questions to answer based on what they read.
Canadian War Museum		3	Sponsored by the Canada War Museum, there are numerous areas of interest on this site. This particular part, ""Over the Top"" is an interactive adventure which allows you to experience life in the trenches during the First World War.
CanPix: Great Canadian Image Base		1,2,3	CanPix is an image base of over 3,500 pictures and audiovisual resources for Canadian Studies. You can search, view and extract images of: Important Canadian people, events and places, examples of Canadian culture, flags, coats of arms, flowers and maps of Canada and the provinces, & audio and text files, including O Canada.
Heritage Post Interactive		1,2,3	Heritage Post magazine has gone interactive on the Web. This bilingual magazine has always contained interesting information in readable chunks for students of all ages. Issue 1 includes Teaching History on the Net, Resounding Symbols, Group of Seven. Issue 2 deals with flight and Canadian contributions in World War I and later.
