Heritage and Citizenship: Grade 4 - Medieval Times

The study of Heritage and Citizenship in Grade 4 focuses on medieval times. Students examine the basic features of medieval society, such as trade, transportation, design and technology, government, culture, and beliefs. They describe the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, Islamic culture, and the Magna Carta on medieval society. They also examine the influence of medieval society on the world today.

Bulfinch’s Mythology		What a find! This award-winning site is the electronic version of the classic book. Included are Greek, Roman and Nordic tales, as well as Medieval Tales of King Arthur and the Middle Ages.
Castle Builder		In this lesson, students are asked to build a castle for Norman Baron William de Clare in Wales in the year 1076. A wonderful research project.
Castles of Britain		This site has several good sections that describe castles in Great Britain

Castles on the Web		This is an excellent site for students to take a guided tour through a castle chosen from a number of countries.
Medieval Warfare Main Page		This site is a student researched site. It contains many useful links to sites about Medieval Warfare. It also has a section on Castle Defenses, Tools of Siege, and Hand-to-Hand Combat.
Middle School Archaeology Web Unit		This is an excellent introduction or addition to any of the Junior “Heritage and Citizenship” units. As the student works through the site, he learns such things as what archaeology is (and isn’t), what archaeologists do and how they do it, and what we can learn from artifacts.
Annenberg/CPB Projects Exhibits Collection		This site is a good resource about the middle ages. Categories include: Feudal Life, Religion, Homes, Clothing, Health, Arts&Entertainment, and Town Life.
Atlapedia Online		Atlapedia Online contains full colour physical and political maps as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world.
Battle of Hastings 1066		This site deals with the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It has many pictures, maps and text giving a full description of the time period and the battle itself
