Women In Technology
A number of local teenage girls have the opportunity to
take part in a unique chance to learn about the latest
technology as part of an initiative called Women In Technology. The
half-day program, sponsored by IBM Canada, local women
in industry volunteers and the Greater Essex County District
School Board, brings girls in grade 7 and 8 together to
learn about the various career opportunities available
to them in the technology industry and of course have a
little bit of fun along the way! A series of programs
are scheduled each school year.
In 1998, IBM Canada launched the 'Women in Technology
(WIT) Workshops Series' a community-level initiative that
enables young girls aged 12-18 years to hear directly from
IBM's high-tech women about IT career options, the importance
of studying math and science subjects, and to receive hands-on
experience with some of the latest computer technology. During
the workshop, women from IBM and the technology sector
will work with small teams of girls to discuss technology
opportunities and to help the girls prepare hands-on presentations
to be presented to the larger group at the end of the workshop.
There are numerous opportunities in the technology field
for women to participate, so many that young girls aren’t
even aware of them all. Through events such as the Women
In Technology program, we are letting young girls know
that technology can be fun and that they should keep their
career options open.
Women in Technology is IBM Canada’s largest community
outreach program with over 600 volunteers across the country
who have reached 25,000 young girls since the program’s
inception. The program has also expanded to the U.S., Latin
America, United Kingdom, Asia and Europe and there are
currently 100 WIT chapters world-wide.
