Council plays an important role in the education system of your children. Council meetings provide a time through which parents can contribute to improving student achievement and school performance through recommendations and financial support. It is very important to have a good partnership with the school and parents, and when this happens, it improves the school environment for our children.

At the start of each school year, nominations forms are sent home with students where parents or guardians can nominate themselves to be a part of the Davis School Council. Elections are held in late September or early October. You do not need to be a member of council to attend meetings. Meetings are held the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. with the staff being represented by the Principal and a Teacher Representative. Several topics are discussed i.e.: literacy, safety of the students, book fairs, milk program, snack program, fundraising, fun fair, teacher requests, how council money will be spent, etc. All parents or guardians are welcomed.

We believe, as Michael Fullen states, that the primary role of School Councils is to "develop powerful partnerships between schools, families and their communities, with the goal of improved education for all children."

Student Council

Student Council is an important student organization, representing the student body at Davis Public School.

Students from grade 4 to 8, together with their sponsor teachers, meet regularly to plan and organize student functions and fund-raising activities. The Council also promotes all other student related activities that take place in our school, such as Jump Rope for Heart.

Student Council work begins early in the school year. During the first meeting of the year we review our previous action plans and new or revised actions plans are implemented for the upcoming year. Many varied and fun activities take place. Our activities have included: A penny line, a can drive, UNICEF drive, Coats for Kids drive, Canadian Cancer Society Drive, and various others fund raising initiatives. As well, several school spirit days are planned. Last but not least on the list are the dances that the Student Council organizes throughout the year.

As you can imagine, this is just a sampling of what occurs at Davis Public School. Student Council is indeed an integral part of our school.
