Safe School Plan

Keeping schools safe continues to be a top priority of the Greater Essex County District School Board.

The Board's Safe Schools Policy, which has been created with input from the community, determines the guidelines
for the creation and maintenance of a safe and harmonious learning, teaching and working environment.
The Greater Essex County District School Board requires all schools to review and modify their Safe Schools Plan each year.
Our Davis school committee has representatives from our Parents and our Staff.
Our V.I.P. officer also contributed to our review process.
The components of our Davis Safe School Plan include:

Code of Conduct
Community Assistance/Police Liaison/School Neighbourhood Watch
Crisis Intervention Team/Staff Training
Evacuation Plan
Parent/School Involvement
Safe School Committee
School Security Review
Student Emergency Response Training
Student Programs
Supervision of School/School Sponsored Activities/Coaches Training.

The information in our Safe School Plan is shared with the staff, the students and the parents in the fall of each year.
All of us who are members of the Wm. G. Davis community need to support one another
to ensure a safe and positive learning environment for all of the learners.
A copy of our Safe School Plan is available in the office for your perusal.

As well, the Ontario Government introduced the Code of Conduct and Safe Schools Act 2000
which includes Regulations, Standards and Expectations in the areas for Student Conduct, Discipline, Appropriate Dress
and Access to School Premises. Adherence to the requirements stated in this legislation, as well as the Board's policy,
is expected of all members of the school community.

Every member of a school community has a responsibility to assist in creating and maintaining safe schools.
All those involved with schools are asked to serve as leaders and role models for students.

The new provincial guidelines, and Board policy, focus on nine key areas:

Safety of Pupils
Access to School Premises
Appropriate Dress
Opening and Closing Exercises
Code of Conduct
Student Discipline
Suspensions/Expulsions
Criminal Checks
Police Board Protocol

Revisions have been made to our Parent-Student Handbook to conform to the new legislation.
As outlined in the Safe Schools' Act, revisions in specific areas have been made in consultation with the Davis School Advisory Council.

The Safe Schools' Act, 2000, covers many areas to ensure a safe, orderly and respectful environment for all members of the school community.
Some revisions are necessary in order to comply with the broad aspects of the new legislation.
However, because the previous Safe Schools' Policy of the Greater Essex County District School Board
had always placed a high priority on the safety of our students and our school environment, much of what is contained in the new legislation
has been in place in all our schools for many years.

The new legislation continues to support previous legislation, found in Reg. 298 - Operation of Schools - General, which states:

A pupil shall,
be diligent in attempting to master such studies as are a part of the program in which the pupil is enrolled,
    exercise self-discipline,
accept such discipline as would be exercised by a kind, firm and judicious parent,
    attend classes punctually and regularly,
be courteous to fellow pupils, and obedient and courteous to teachers,
be clean in person and habits,
    take such tests and examinations as are required by or under the Act, or as may be directed by the Minister;
and show respect for school property.

Every pupil is responsible for his or her conduct to the principal of the school that the pupil attends,
on the school premises, on out-of-school activities that are part of the school program; and
while traveling on a school bus that is owned by a board, or on a bus or school bus that is under contract to a board.

While you will see some changes, most of the policies and procedures within our board and school remain the same.
