The Program
Two teachers with their Specialist in Special Education presently work with 60 IPRC (Identification, Placement, Review, Committee) students and 100 SECC (School Education, Conference, Committee) students.
These students are helped in several ways:
Identified students may take a class in grade 9 and 10 called GLE1O (General Learning Exceptionalities). The course teaches organizational and study skills as well as providing tutoring in a small class setting.
These students receive accommodations based on their IEP (Individual Education Plan).
Some common accommodations are:
- extra time for tests and exams
- editing assistance for written expression
- oral reading assistance using voice activated computers and
- increased time for task completion and use of a computer to complete assignments
Students needing assistance with their class work may become "pull out" students. After consultation with the classroom teacher and parent(s), the student may be given additional help by the Learning Support Teacher in a small class setting.
These students leave their classrooms after receiving instructions from their classroom teacher and receive additional assistance in the Learning Support Room.
If students are still struggling, testing may be considered and an IPRC meeting held to determine new strategies.
- Students may receive assistance from peer tutors. Senior students volunteer to help struggling students in areas such as Math, English and Science. They usually meet after school for one hour a week.
All students can receive assistance from their classroom teachers.
Every teacher is willing to help students after school.
Some students benefit from homework checks. Teachers complete and sign the sheet and parents are asked to check the finished homework. Students return the form signed by a parent.
This way parents are kept informed of the classroom requirements.
