Bonjour!
Hola! Welcome to Vincent Massey's Modern Languages Department. There
are numerous reasons why students should continue to study a foreign
language. Here at Vincent Massey, we currently offer two options,
French and Spanish.
Why
study another language? In this day and age the answer always seems
to be employment. Take a moment and look at the Yellow Pages of our
local phone book. You'll find numerous advertisements by lawyers,
dentists, optometrists, day care centers, roofers and chiropractors,
to name but a few, that are advertising the ability to speak another
language. In today's job market you need to sell both yourself and
your abilities, and perhaps not only to a possible employer, but to
a clientele base as well. A second or third language can give you
that extra edge and can open the door to many more career possibilities.
Our objectives in second language teaching are:
To
develop the students' intellectual powers through foreign language study.
To
increase the students' personal culture through the study of foreign literature and
lifestyles.
To
increase the students' understanding of how the language functions which encourages a
greater awareness of the functioning of his/her own language.
To
teach the student to read the foreign language with comprehension in order to keep better
abreast of modern writing, research, and information.
To
bring the students to a greater understanding of people across provincial and national
barriers by giving him/her a sympathetic insight into the life and ways of thinking of the
people who speak the language that he/she is learning.
To
provide the students with skills enabling him/her to communicate orally, at to some degree
in writing, with speakers of another language and with people of other nationalities who
have also learned this language.
