Balanced Day Info
The Balanced School Day
What is it?
A school day/timetable organization that is different than the traditional timetable
3 x 100 minute teaching blocks, separated by two “nutrition breaks”
What are the differences between the Balanced Day & Traditional Timetable?
Instead of two recesses and a lunch, the Balanced Day groups the two recesses into one nutrition break. The traditional lunch becomes the second nutrition break.
The nutrition breaks are longer than regular recess which allows for longer play time and potential for extra-curricular activities to be offered during the school day.
Students “graze” twice instead of eat once in the middle of the day.
Students go outside twice a day instead of three times
Does it affect bussing or bell times?
No. The start and end of the school day are the same, the traditional recess and lunch are just grouped differently.
Why move to the Balanced Day?
Academic benefits include:
increased student focus and concentration levels, particularly at the end of the day
large blocks of uninterrupted instruction time
less time lost during transitions
more time on task for students
Daily Physical Activity (DPA) fits easily and productively into student learning
appropriate placement of rotary subjects to best meet student needs
greater opportunity for Grade level teachers to team plan
better opportunity for guest speakers (longer blocks of time)
Non-academic benefits include:
more energy from staff and students
more time for students to eat
students not as hungry
less garbage on the playground – fewer bee stings
students eat healthier
improved student behaviour
sugar levels better regulated by grazing
students who go home for lunch, can do so in the first nutrition break
longer nutrition breaks allow for doctors appointments etc. to take place during non-instruction time and allow for extra-curricular activities during the day
Are there any reasons not to move to the Balanced Day?
Student lunch and parent lunch hours from work may not coincide
There will be a period of time (usually two weeks) when students need to learn what to eat when so that they don’t run out of food
Parents will need to pack lunches differently (nutrition break menu suggestions from health units will be available)
There are seemingly 20 fewer minutes of outdoor play; however, students do not currently get the full 15 minutes each recess because of the time to get dressed and out the doors. With the Balanced Day, they are outside getting the maximum amount of recess time.
Students with health concerns (i.e. diabetics) may need to do tests & eat at different times than classmates.

Balanced Day Highlights
The Ontario Ministry of Education is encouraging the implementation of 100 minute instructional blocks for Literacy and Math – the Balanced Day timetable achieves this.
With the Balanced Day, the students gain instructional time by putting coats, hats, boots etc. on twice a day instead of three times.
Student behaviour improves since there is less unstructured time.
Provincial Health Units & the Dieticians of Ontario support the concept of two more substantial nutrition breaks compared to traditional small snack and large lunch.
Students are moving through the building en masse twice a day instead of three times and large number of students are not moving through the hallway while others are learning
