Introduction

Gung Hay Fat Choy!

One of the oldest and most important festivals in China is the Spring Festival, also known in the West as Chinese New Year. To the Chinese it is as important as Christmas to the people in Canada.

Like all Chinese festivals, the date of the new year is determined by the lunar/solar calendar rather than the Western (Gregorian) calendar, so the date of the holiday varies from late January to mid February. In 2005 Chinese New Year is celebrated on February 9.
