The Greater Essex County District School Board supports and encourages volunteer activities because they benefit students, schools, the school system, as well as the volunteers themselves.

These benefits may include:

  • enriching educational programs and services;
  • enhancing student success and achievement;
  • providing volunteers with opportunities to use their knowledge and skills;
  • enabling volunteers to gain valuable experience, personal growth and satisfaction.

There are many opportunities at LaSalle Public School for parents and other adults in the community to contribute their time and talents to enrich the education of our students. We are excited about having volunteers work with us again this year.

Volunteering will give you the opportunity to be more involved with your child’s education and to give you a first hand look at the excellent programs we provide. Shown below is a list of voluntary activities in which you can be involved. If you are able to help, please let us know! Thank-you for considering this request.

Volunteers at LPS

Kiss and Ride
32 Kiss and Ride workers from Grades 4 and 5, work 1 day each week to walk the JK-SK children to their classes in the morning when they are dropped off by parents. Bus Buddies are available to walk the JK-SK children to and from the buses as well.

Foot Safety Patrols
41 Foot Patrols have now been trained by Constable Tonin, and are ready to take up their duties. The schedules will go home with the patrols, and we ask that the parents help their sons and daughters to be at their posts on time, dressed for the weather, and prepared to keep our students safe. Our most difficult corner is Mayfair and Delaware, as there is not an adult guard at that intersection. Mrs. Glasgow is the teacher who will oversee the foot patrols this year. She will be assisted by Mrs. Bachmeier. Foot Patrol vests cost $7, and we ask that they be hung up if wet, and kept folded neatly in the patrols' backpacks in case of emergency duty. The patrols are to wear a plastic cape if it is raining, but are excused from duty if there is lightning.

Bus Patrols
36 Bus Patrols went to the safety training at Malden Park on September 24. Mr. Schauer accompanied them, and Laidlaw's Bus trainers reported that they were excellent listeners and very respectful. We are so proud of our students.

Lunch Monitors

Lunch Monitors, from Grades 7 and 8, work two-week shifts. They sit and eat with the students from Grades 1 to 6, and keep them safe. The Adult Noon Aides supervise the rooms from the hallways. If there are behaviour problems, those students must eat in the Conference Room for a number of days.

Kindergarten Helpers

Kindergarten Helpers, specially selected by the JK-SK teachers, not only eat with the children, but go outside and help them with their playground games, always watching for safe play. Adult Noon Aides supervise this area, as well.

Hall Monitors

Hall Monitors help us to monitor the washrooms at recesses, see that the students are orderly and safe, and report any problems. At this time, we have about 40 students from Grades 5 and 6, as well as some subs.

LPS Parent Volunteers are So Very Much Appreciated

Our Noon Aides enjoy their duties immensely, because they are people who like children! They are enjoying having new walkie-talkies available for ease of communication, and we appreciate that they are wearing orange safety vests for visibility. We do have regular aides, but we really are in need of parents who would serve as emergency aides, as the cold and flu season approaches. Parents, if you are willing to serve in this area, please call or send us a note. We need your help. Student safety necessitates that we have adequate coverage.

Parent Gardeners

17 Parent Gardeners have volunteered, already, to help weed and care for our beds. Thank you! Would gardeners please send their e-mail address in to the office, for Mrs. Hutz? E-mail is easier than phone calls. LPS parents, would any of you be willing to donate a half-dozen daffodil bulbs? Our gardeners would surely plant them, and they would be a pleasure in the spring. No tulips, please.... The squirrels dig them up.

We need to expand our list of Noon Aide substitutes and we are still looking for a temporary Noon Aide to work in the JK-SK rooms at noon on Tuesday, Thursday, and alternate Fridays. This is to fill-in in case one of our regular parents must be absent. This person needs to be patient, kind and safety conscious. If you are a parent who might enjoy being involved at school for an hour, please volunteer your name. All of our regular noon aides must have a current TB test and a police clearance. We thankall of the wonderful moms for their work with our students.
Many parents have volunteered to help weed and care for our school gardens. Now is the time to do a fall cleanup of weeds, and perhaps even plant some daffodils or perennials. Please, parents, feel free to come in anytime, trowel, hoe and clippers in hand. Just check in at the office, and find a garden bed that needs a little TLC. We would be very grateful for your assistance. Special thanks to all of those who have done some work already.
